Rustic Lace Hat

rustic lace hat laid flat

The Rustic Lace Hat and the Rustic Lace Scarf make the perfect light weight, lacy set for cooler temperatures! They work up fairly quickly and use only chains and double crochets.

The hat and scarf pattern use the same stitches, but they are in fact different patterns. The hat is worked in the round, while the scarf is worked flat.

This hat is crocheted using a size 1 super fine weight yarn, but please don’t let that deter you from trying this pattern! When it comes to using smaller hooks and finer yarn, your comfort lies in your hooks. I use Boye Ergonomic Crochet Hooks with thick rubber handles.

They are cost effective and very high quality for the price. I bought the whole set of different sizes and I use these hooks daily — especially the H hook, which happens to be my favorite! If you’d like to see the set or purchase your own, click the (affiliate) link above. I’d never refer you to a product that I don’t use and love.

You can create this hat using a heavier weight yarn and larger hook. What you would need to do is find your foundation chain (or starting chain) length.

To do that, you would simply chain a multiple of 10 chains and either wrap it around your head to see if it would fit or measure the length and compare that to a head size chart. After you discover your new foundation chain length, you would then continue on with the instructions without changing anything else.

This set would also make a great gift for this upcoming holiday season!

Here’s some truth real quick. After I made the example that was photographed here, I changed the brim part of the pattern a bit. The “what I should have done, but I’m not going back to redo it” version is what you see.

When I tested the pattern, I used the new instructions and I loved it so much more! Maybe I’ll frog mine and redo it… So if your finished brim looks slightly different from the example, that is why. The difference will be the horizontal lines created by working in the back loops. Nothing major. Just thought you should know. πŸ™‚

Alright, let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain (starting chain)

st(s) – stitch(es)

ch(s) – chain(s)

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • If you use a yarn that is heavier than the size 1 super fine yarn used in the example, your finished hat will be too large. To adjust the size of the hat for a heavier weight yarn, crochet a FC with a multiple of 10 chains. Measure it by wrapping the chain around your head to see if it would fit. Then follow the rest of the instructions below. Nothing other than the FC would change.
  • This Rustic Lace Hat is not worked in the round continuously. You will complete a round, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 turning chain and then chain 3 to begin the next round.
  • The band of your hat is the only time you will not turn your work after each round. You will continue to work in the same direction for all three rounds. Once you begin the main hat pattern (beginning with Round 4), you will turn after every round.
  • If you get confused when you’re turning your work for the main hat pattern, remember that if you look at the stitch cluster (dc, ch 2, 4 dc) from the previous round, you always want to be working toward the side that has 1 dc rather than the 4 dc.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Instructions:

Using H/8 (5.00 mm) hook

FC: Ch 90. Careful not to twist your FC chain, sl st in the first ch to form a loop.

Switch to G/6 (4.25 mm) hook

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in every ch around. Sl st in top of ch 3. Don’t turn. {90 dc}

Round 2 – 3: Ch 3, working in BLO, dc in every ch around. Sl st in top of ch 3. Don’t turn. {90 dc}

Round 4: Ch 3, working in BLO around, dc in next 4 sts, skip next st, (4 dc, ch 2, dc) all in next st, skip 3 sts, *dc in next 5 sts, skip next st, (4 dc, ch 2, dc) all in next st, skip 3 sts* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in top of ch 3. Turn.

Round 5: Ch 3. In ch-2 space from previous round, (4 dc, ch 2, dc). Skip next 4 sts, *dc in next 5 sts, skip 1 st, in ch-2 space, (4 dc, ch 2, dc), skip next 4 sts* Repeat from * to * around. Dc in next 4 sts, sl st in top of ch 3. Turn.

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts, skip 1 st, in next ch-2 space (4 dc, ch 2, dc), skip next 4 sts, *dc in next 5 sts, skip 1 st, in next ch-2 space, (4 dc, ch 2, dc), skip next 4 sts* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in top of ch 3. Turn.

Continue to alternate Rounds 5 and 6 until Round 23.

Finish off. Leave a long tail (approx. 6”) for sewing.

Finishing

Using your tapestry needle and long tail, weave in and out the entire way around the opening along Round 23, skipping 4 – 5 sts in between. Pull tight. Make sure your end is on the inside of the hat. Tie your knot to secure the closure. Weave in ends if desired.

  1. Thanks so much for the lovely (and easy) pattern. I did it in a multi coloured lace weight yarn with a acrylic/wool/ mohair blend, it turned out really nice, and very lacy looking.
